Standing Up For LB Wednesday, 15 May 2013 Is it good land use to build a heavy industrial project next to schools, parks, and residences without any buffer? Is it appropriate to build a goods movement project with negative impacts on surrounding veterans, students, and children with $0 in community mitigation funds? Last night, the City Council answered these questions unanimously by authorizing litigation: No.
Teen Justice Tuesday, 23 April 2013 Too many teenagers in Long Beach have known only the negative side of our criminal justice system, with neighbors or relatives going in and out of our prisons and jails. I believe youth also need to see the positive side of justice in their communities--the relief brought to victims and the proper punishment of those who harm them. Thus, I worked with City Prosecutor Doug Haubert, LBUSD Board Member Felton Williams, and school officials to open the first "Teen Court" in Long Beach at Cabrillo High School.
Stop Bullying Thursday, 18 April 2013 All of us should be concerned with the safety and respect of our community's school children. That is why I am pleased to report of the progress we have made toward combating bullying in Long Beach. The Joint Use Committee between LBUSD and the City of Long Beach, which I chair, has initiated a forum on how to best prevent bullying on Friday, May 17th from 8 A.M. to 12 P.M. at Cesar Chavez Park.
